This week's featured book-to-movie adventure is Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows starring the ever-amazing Robert Downey Jr. and fellow hottie, Jude Law.
In case you are out of the loop, the Sherlock Holmes re-boot franchise is based (although somewhat loosely) on the novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Besides being, evidently, a knight and an inspiration, surely, in the naming of my favorite late night talk show host (Team Coco!), Doyle was an unsurpassed weaver of mysteries and suspense. The movies aren't literally based on plots from his books so here are a couple from his oeuvre to get you started:
A Study in Scarlet was Doyle's first novel to feature the enduring sleuth, Sherlock Holmes and his ever faithful sidekick, Dr. Watson. This is a great novel to begin your Holmes reading as it introduces the characters and their quirks. However, The Hound of the Baskervilles might be Doyle's best Holmes novel (certainly my favorite) and is probably his best known.
Downey and Law reunite as Holmes and Watson for another go around with Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. If you haven't seen their first outing as the crime-solving duo, I suggest you pick it up.
Downey's Holmes is not one for burberry capes and curved pipes. He is a brilliant, quirky, enigmatic, kick-ass man who desperately needs the calming, sane influence of his buddy, Dr. Watson. Without their Bromance, I'm not sure Holmes could survive in the real world. The movie promises insane stunts, amazing visual effects and also stars my fave from the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movies: Noomi Rapace!
