In My Mailbox (16)

This meme is hosted by The Story Siren and you should head over there straightaway to check out what's hot in books right now.

Yay, library!! I have been coveting Hourglass ever since I first saw the cover. Abandon and Die for Me both sound amazing and, again, what gorgeous covers!! I have heard amazing things about Rain Falls Like Mercy and I think it will be just the ticket to break up my Paranormal YA-heavy rotation.

So, I read the first Maximum Ride book, The Angel Experiment, last week and although I didn't intend to get hooked on a new series, I sure did. I had to grab the second one straightaway and it's all I can do to not let it jump to the front of the line! I'm pretty sure this series isn't changing lives, but it sure is fast and fun.

I've had this book on my TBR forever! In case you haven't heard of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks here's the info:

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine.

The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they’d weigh more than 50 million metric tons—as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings.

HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions.

Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave.
Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down,
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.

This week: Moscow Sting by Alex Dryden

The Scoop: (Goodreads)

Former British spy Finn is dead, poisoned by a Russian assassin, and his ex-boss, the chief of MI6, wants vengeance . . . and answers. Finn's widow, Anna Resnikov, holds the key to the secrets to his death and to her motherland--but the onetime KGB colonel, who betrayed her country for love, vanished with their child shortly after Finn's murder.

The CIA also wants Anna, as does the powerful private American intelligence company Cougar. She's in the KGB's crosshairs as well--the only person who knows the true identity of the Kremlin insider and double agent known as Mikhail, whose knowledge of Russia's obscure intentions for its newfound oil wealth is coveted by the West. With friend and foe alike closing in, Anna must uncover a shocking truth before anyone else does. What's at stake is her freedom . . . and the life of her innocent child.

  1. I really want to check out The Other Life. Looks super good. Great haul.

    1. I'm super excited about it. The more I hear about it, the more I want to let it skip the line in my TBR pile.

  2. HOURGLASS. HOURGLASS IS AMAZING. *coughs* It's probably one of the books I've talked about the most and consistently recc'ed to everyone who seems at least halfway interested. I haven't read Die for Me yet (I know, I know) and I'd love to get my hands on Romeo Redeemed but I...haven't read Juliet Immortal. *sighs* TOO MUCH ELSE to read. Eek. Enjoy, Steph!
