Shelf Candy Saturday (19)

Shelf Candy Saturday is a meme that celebrates the many times unrecognized, but invaluable hard work of book cover designers. They say never judge a book by its cover, but you know you do!!
So now, run on over to Five Alarm Book Reviews (the creators of this fun meme) and check out more awesome covers!

This week I want to feature the cover of a book I was lucky enough to pick up from Netgalley and it sounds so interesting: The Other Life (UK) or The Weepers: The Other Life (US) by Susanne Winnacker. I was unable to find info on the creative designer, but The UK cover is amazing:

I love the detail in the butterfly, a normally fragile and ethereally beautiful creature turned into a bloody dripping and scary thing. It has blood dripping from its wings, shadowy figures running hand-in-hand in its wings, and claw hands in the other wings...creeeeeeepy. Not to mention, the barbed wire in the foreground and the mysterious city in the background. Love it! Plus, it's a book about zombies!

Book Scoop (Goodreads):

3 years, 1 month, 1 week and 6 days since I’d seen daylight. One-fifth of my life. 98,409,602 seconds since the heavy, steel door had fallen shut and sealed us off from the world

Sherry has lived with her family in a sealed bunker since things went wrong up above. But when they run out of food, Sherry and her dad must venture outside. There they find a world of devastation, desolation...and the Weepers: savage, mutant killers.

When Sherry's dad is snatched, she joins forces with gorgeous but troubled Joshua - an Avenger, determined to destroy the Weepers.

But can Sherry keep her family and Joshua safe, when his desire for vengeance threatens them all?

Book Trailer for your viewing pleasure (You Tube):

I have to admit, I'm not as jazzed about the US cover:

Not a big fan of models on covers in general just because I like to picture the characters myself. The UK cover is so compelling, I'm kind of sad that the have replaced it with the (IMHO) lesser one for the US release.

What do you guys think?

Be sure to head to Five Alarm Book Reviews (FABR for the cool kids :) ) and see what everyone else is featuring this week!

  1. This looks like such an amazing read. I will have to give it a try. As for the cover...awesome. I especially like the barbed wire.
I like the UK cover too. I appreciate getting to see them both and thanks for including the trailer.

  2. Have to agree with you.

The UK cover looks minimalistic and not too busy in comparison to the US one - plus it's more atmospheric.

  3. wow! I love the music in the trailer and I like the UK cover better! That red butterfly is amazing (i have a soft spot for butterflies)! This looks like an intersting synopsis as well. I agree, the US cover isn't quite a eye catching as the UK. Great picks!!
