Movie Monday: Safe Haven

Keeping you in the loop with all of your favorite book to movie adaptations!

I'm not typically a huge Nicholas Sparks fan, but I will say I watch The Notebook each and every time that it is on TV and tell myself that this time I won't cry (sure you know how that turns out...).

Well, true Nicholas Sparks fans will find a reason to flock to theaters this Valentine's Day to check out the latest adaptation of one of his novels, Safe Haven.

Love hurts. There is nothing as painful as heartbreak. But in order to learn to love again, you must learn to trust again.

When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.

But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

“Every couple needs to argue now and then. Just to prove that the relationship is strong enough to survive. Long-term relationships, the ones that matter, are all about weathering the peaks and the valleys.”

“Love doesn't mean anything if you're not willing to make a commitment, and you have to think not only about what you want, but about what he wants. Not just now, but in the future.”

Not sure if Safe Haven wasn't released to the critics for early reviews or if they just didn't want to review it, but only two critics have shared their opinions on Rotten Tomatoes and they are split down the middle. However, audience anticipation is high with a 94% "Want to See" rating.

"Most of the film is also very nice as the slowly budding romance is observed to bloom with the tentative nature of a snail on dope." - Andrew L. Urban - Urban Cinefile - Full Review

"While none of the elements of this Valentine Day release chick-flick are remarkable in themselves, in the gifted hands of director Lasse Hallström, there is definitely magic at work." - Louise Keller - Urban Cinefile - Full Review
